»Argentina Overview

(Die Deutsche version wird demnächst zur Verfügung stehen)

Argentina is located where  South America ends. It is the eighth largest country in the world and the second-largest in South America with an area of almost 3.8 million m2 (3800 km from north to south). Its large geographic size however is no problem as far as travel is concerned. Domestic flights or buses (Argentina has one of the best bus systems in America: comfortable and safe coaches fitted with toilets and air conditioning), make it easy to get around. Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Chile and the Atlantic Ocean all border Argentina.

Natural Attractions

Argentina contains great natural and varied landscapes. Rainforests, deserts, mountains, tropical jungles, huge plains, long beaches and rivers and waterfalls of pure, clean water.

In the west, Argentina is bordered by the southern Andean mountain range. Mount Aconcagua at 6959 metres is its principal attraction and the highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere.

The northwest exhibits a wonderful variety of coloured hills and deserts, while Patagonia in the south is an impressive land full of lakes, forests, glaciers and isolated plateaus.

The Iguazu Falls in the northeast are perhaps the most wonderful waterfalls in the world. One can experience this magnificent attraction close-up on the Argentine side of the Falls.

If you are looking for a place to practice trekking, climbing or biking, then Cordoba' sierras are the best option. It is only 45 minute journey from the centre of Cordoba city to the heart of the sierras where one can find pretty mountains, lakes and rivers.

In the midwest there are two national parks with archeological and paleonthological relevance: Talampaya and Moon Valley.

Climate and Seasons

Argentina has a very varied climate. The seasons are reversed from those in the northern hemisphere, so plan accordingly when selecting your clothes.

 Population

Argentina has about 38 million inhabitants. A large percentage of whom descend from Spanish, Italians, Germans and other Europeans. As such the population is very mixed. The people are very friendly and helpful. So it is quite easy to feel at home.

City Life

In the biggest cities (Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Mendoza) there are many cultural activities as well as good food and good nightlife including pubs, discos and bars. Some travellers enjoy the fact that they blend in because the locals dress and look very European or American.

Religion

Most inhabitants are catholic, however there are other religious groups in Argentina including protestant, jewish and buddhist.
